Which ear correction procedure is right for me?

A lot of progress has been made in techniques used for ear correction. With different options now available for pinning ears back, how do you know which is right for you?

There are some key differences between the two main techniques: Earfold® and the traditional Stitch Otoplasty (also recently referred to as Ear Stitch). The earfold is relatively new and is very effective. Stitch Otoplasty has been around for a long time and is now simpler with easier recovery than was previously possible.

Every person’s ears and concerns are different. Also the ear cartilage shape, strength and elasticity are different in all people. Because of this, there simply is no “one-size-fits-all” solution.

I recommend that you see an ear specialist for a consultation.
The correct solution for you will very much depend on the elasticity and shape of your particular ears

Here I compare the two surgical treatments, dispel the myths and give you the unbiased details so that you can better understand the options available to you.

What is it?
Main advantage
Main disadvantage

A small implant inserted through a small incision on the front of the ear that holds the Antihelix in the desired position.
Quick and predictable - see the results using the Prefold before the procedure.
Only suitable for Antihelix concerns due to the single action of the implant. Will not produce good result in all ears.
It does not treat all ear concerns effectively.

Stitch Otoplasty / Ear Stitch

A method of ear correction using stitches to hold the position of the ear.
Precise control of the ear correction. Effective for all ear shapes.
Longer operation. Minor change in the position of the ear can occur in 5% of people.
It does not require a general anaesthetic (except young children) or wearing a bandage for weeks.

Earfold® | The Facts

Earfold® is a highly effective technique for correcting  ears that “stick out”. It holds the Antihelix in position in a very predictable way. You can even see the exact position of the ear before any incision is made by using the Prefold.

The implant itself is made of a highly flexible material that will hold its original shape for your entire lifetime. It is inserted through a small incision on the front of the ear in a simple, minimally invasive procedure. It is quick to apply, minimal dressing is needed and there is almost no chance of the problem recurring.

Pre-Fold applied to simulate effect

Perfect for everyone?

The Earfold® solution however is not suitable for everyone due to its single mechanism of action which is to fold the antihelix of the ear with a pre-set strength. This may not give a good result for every ear as the elasticity and strength of the ear cartilage is different from one patient to another. Also the earfold doesn’t address the problem of enlarged cartilage in the bowl of the ear (conchal bowl).

Earfold® Pros

  • Safe
  • Quick & simple
  • Minimally invasive
  • Quick recovery
  • Highly predictable outcome
  • No risk of problem recurring

Earfold® Cons

  • Just one mechanism of action (no precise control of whole ear shape)
  • Incision is on front of ear
  • Only effective for certain ear concerns

Ear Stitch Otoplasty | The Facts

Stitch Otoplasty (earstitch)

Otoplasty with stitches (or Ear Stitch) is the more traditional, alternative method and is performed by inserting stitches behind the ear to fold it back. It is safe, can be performed under local anaesthetic (except in young children) and bandages are only required overnight to protect the ears.

The main advantage of this technique is the precise control in adjusting the shape of the ear so it is more appropriate when the Earfold® does not produce a good result as well as for those whose concerns cannot be corrected by the Earfold®.

It takes longer to do than the Earfold® and requires a larger incision but this is hidden behind the ear. A minor disadvantage to the Otoplasty method of ear correction is a small risk of partial recurrence of prominence (less than 5{82ef48bd981dc220f81c4f72e9c3866ba645e010f63c46dce235c6109bc60eef}) which can easily be dealt with if it happens.

Stitch Otoplasty Pros

  • Safe
  • Precise control of ear correction
  • Usually performed under local anaesthetic
  • Bandages only required overnight
  • Incision is on back of ear

Stitch Otoplasty Cons

  • Larger incision
  • Takes longer to perform
  • Small chance of problem recurring (5{82ef48bd981dc220f81c4f72e9c3866ba645e010f63c46dce235c6109bc60eef})
